Handmade Nautical Christmas ornaments
Handmade Nautical Christmas ornaments
I like to keep my hands busy. A typical day around here might include touching up the brightwork on a boat or two, designing a skiff, milling a custom part, handmaking rope for jewelry or a sailboat, and bending planks onto a new model hull. In the evenings, and on stormy afternoons, I row back home to my boat, put on some Muddy Waters, light the kerosene lamp, and tie some fancy knotwork. These are the end products.
A few notes about the designs:
The Brewer's Star (6 pointed star) symbolizes the three "elements" involved in brewing: fire, water and air; the other triangle symbolize the three "ingredients" used in brewing: malt, hops and water. An interesting design for the beermaker- or beer lover.
The Sailor’s Knot (4 pointed star): Two lines woven together to create endless loops. Celtic sailors wove these knots in memory of those they left behind when they set sail. The design also represents eternal love. We've included it here because this is also known as the Christmas star. Like the Magi, we sailors depend upon the stars to guide us.
